چکیده

The Mars Pathfinder Microrover Flight Experiment (MFEX) is a NASA Office of Space Access and Technology (OSAT) flight experiment which has been delivered and integrated with the Mars Pathfinder (MPF) lander and spacecraft system. The total cost of the MFEX mission, including all subsystem design and development, test, integration with the MPF lander and operations on Mars has been capped at $25M. At time of delivery, approximately two-thirds of the cost has been incurred. The components of this rover, implemented in combinations of commercial, mil-spec and some space qualified parts, have undergone and passed environment and operational test series derived from that expected in configuration with the lander and in operation on the Martian surface. This paper discusses the process and the implementation scheme which has resulted in the development of this first Mars rover. The subsystem designs which have proven successful (and not so successful) are also described briefly along with the requirements and constraints (with cost an integral factor) which resulted in these designs. The qualification status of these subsystems is also presented.

Long Range Navigation for Mars Rovers Using Sensor-based Path Planning and Visual Localisation

The Mars Pathfinder mission illustrated the benefits of including a mobile robotic explorer on a planetary mission. However, for future Mars rover missions, significantly increased autonomy in navigation is required in order to meet demanding mission criteria. To address these requirements, we have developed new path planning and localisation capabilities that allow a rover to navigate robustly...

Mars Pathfinder Microrover a Small, Low-cost, Low-power Spacecraft

On December 5, 1996, NASA will launch its first Discovery Class Mission, the Mars Pathfinder. On July 4, 1997 the 450 kg spacecraft will enter into the Martian atmosphere and descend directly to the surface using a viking style aeroshell, parachutes, RAD rockets, and airbags to slow its decent. Once on the surface the tetrahedrally-shaped lander will open like a flower and release a 10.5 kg rov...

On-board Software for the Mars Pathfinder Microrover

The Pathfinder Micro-rover Flight experiment will perform engineering and science experiments on the Martian surface to pave the way for future Mars missions. The rover is controlled by a 1970's era microprocessor. Its on-board software, while in some ways a typical embedded-system design, has to deal with some unusual constraints. The rover will be operating in a harsh and mostly unknown envir...

An Autonomous Path Planner Implemented on the Rocky7 Prototype Microrover

Much prior work in mobile robot path planning har been based on assumptions that are not really applicable for exploration of planetary terrains. Based on the first author’s experience with the recent Mars Pathfinder mission, this paper reviews the issues that are critical for successful autonomous navigation of planetary rovers. No currently proposed methodology accurately addresses ali of the...

Streamlined Design Approach Lands Mars Pathfinder

ded systems software for planetary space exploration. The high degree of reliability, autonomy, and flexibility these systems require, combined with demanding mission requirements and the high cost of failure, place extraordinary demands on the systems produced. In September 1993, we began our attempt at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to land a spacecraft on the planet Mars. This spacecraft, Mar...
